Basics: My steering has an issue…

Most modern cars are fitted with an electric steering unit of some sort. It may be an electric steering rack, an electric column or even a hydro-electric steering pump.

Common Problems Include:

Power Steering Solutions Cape Town
  • Steering Light On

  • Steering feels heavy

  • Not Self-Centering

  • Torque Sensor Fault

  • Motor Fault Code

  • Noisy Steering

These are the locations of each section of a vehicles steering rack.

The electric steering racks will fit between the wheels and be connected to the steering wheel via a manual steering column, which bolts onto the top pinion splines of the rack.
The electric steering column will fit between the steering wheel and the steering rack.
The hydro-electric steering pump will be in the engine compartment and connects to the steering rack via hydraulic hoses. It is not fully electric since it still relies on the steering fluid but it is not belt driven by the engine power as it will have it's very own in-built motor.

If your electric power steering has failed, a steering light may illuminate on the dash and the steering may go heavy. Replacing the failed unit will be very expensive and may require coding when installed.
At Power Steering Services, we can repair your existing part at a fraction of the price of a new unit. All remanufactured units are returned with a Lifetime warranty for complete peace of mind and will NOT require coding when re-installed to the vehicle.
